Mohali Municipal Corporation does not have full financial resources for infrastructure maintenance: Kuljit Singh Bedi

The Aman Sandesh Times

Mohali : MC Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has written to the Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission requesting a grant of at least 100 crores to Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali), the mini capital of Punjab province. It may be mentioned that the 16th Finance Commission meeting is going to be held in Chandigarh tomorrow.

Welcoming the 16th Finance Commission on its arrival at Chandigarh, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi said that Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar Mohali, an important city of Tri City, Chandigarh, which has developed as a mini capital of Punjab and where more than half of Punjab office and headquarters are located, should be given a grant of at least Rs.100 crore during the 16th Commission for development and maintenance of infrastructure.

He has brought to the attention of the Chairman Sixteenth Finance Commission that Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar Mohali has developed on a large scale and due to its continuous expansion, the population here has almost doubled. Along with this, the Mohali Municipal Corporation has already passed a resolution to increase the limits of Mohali MC, with which a large area including Balongi will come under the Mohali Municipal Corporation. Not only this, the newly developed sector Aero City, IT City, and the societies and colonies developed by private colonizers will also come under the Municipal Corporation, with which it can be estimated that the population of Mohali will increase around 4 lakh. Therefore, grant should be given according to this increasing population.

Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi said that the second thing is that the city of Mohali has become an Education hub, IT hub and medical hub, so students and people from the entire state and many other states, coming to work and patients and their relatives, puts a lot of pressure on Mohali. He said that people coming from all over the country use the infrastructure here. Therefore, additional funds are required to maintain the infrastructure.

He said that the third important thing is that Mohali has an international airport. The President, Prime Minister and other dignitaries of the country land at Mohali airport and pass through Mohali while going to Punjab, Himachal or Jammu and Kashmir. Hence huge expenditure is required to keep the infrastructure up to date and its constant maintenance while the Mohali Municipal Corporation does not have any major means of income at its level.

Deputy Mere Kuljit Singh Bedi said that Greater Mohali Area Development Authority works in Mohali and everything from property related works is done by GMADA and income also goes to GMADA and Mohali Municipal Corporation has only Property tax is the only support but it is not sufficient.

Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi said that through this letter he has strongly requested the Chairman 16th Finance Commission to give a grant of Rs. 100 crore to Mohali Municipal Corporation under the 16th Finance Commission at least immediately, keeping in mind the above important facts.

A copy of this letter has been sent to the Prime Minister, Government of India, Finance Minister, Government of India, Chief Minister, Punjab, Finance Minister, Punjab and Minister of Local Government Department, Punjab.
