Shimla : Himachal Pradesh is on its way to legalize controlled cultivation of cannabis. The State Assembly passed a significant resolution to legalize cannabis cultivation, following the recommendations of an Assembly committee report.
Committee report finds overwhelming support for cannabis cultivation for industrial, scientific, and medicinal purposes in Himachal Pradesh.
The Assembly committee’s chair and minister of revenue, Jagat Singh Negi, spoke extensively on the findings and the possible advantages of cannabis farming. He pointed out that both the government and opposition parties had supported the concept when it was first brought up in the Assembly under Rule 130. Negi was named the chairman of the committee that was established to look into the matter.
“The committee visited all the districts of Himachal Pradesh and consulted local residents on how cannabis cultivation could be used for medicinal and industrial purposes. We also studied the successful models in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh. The overwhelming consensus was in favour of legalising it in Himachal Pradesh,” Negi said.
He emphasized the usefulness of growing cannabis, pointing out that it doesn’t need a lot of water, is resistant to harm from animals, and is generally disease-free.
